Was Colorado's Supreme Court Right to Remove Trump From 2024 Ballot?

Summary from the AllSides News Team

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled Tuesday that former President Donald Trump is ineligible to run for president in 2024. Was the decision correct, and will the U.S. Supreme Court agree?

The Debate: Many across the spectrum disagree about Trump's level of participation in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, which leads to different interpretations of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment and how it may or may not disqualify him from office.

"Absolutely Right": A writer for CNN Opinion (Left bias) said Colorado's court "decided that the US Constitution still matters," and that Trump was rightfully disqualified because Section 3 is "designed to prohibit people who’ve taken an oath to uphold the Constitution and then participated in an insurrection against the United States from holding elected or appointed office."

The "Wrong" Decision:  Writer Charles C.W. Cooke (Right bias) said he opposes "what Colorado’s supreme court did because, while I’d very much like to see Donald Trump go away... it got the law wrong." He cited an analysis from National Review (Right bias) arguing Trump didn't participate in the Capitol riot "and mostly remained inactive in sullen silence as it proceeded."

"The Rule is Clear": In an interview with CNN (Lean Left bias), former White House lawyer Ty Cobb said he believes "could be 9-0 in the Supreme Court for Trump," and that the ruling "vindicates" Trump’s "insistence that this is a political conspiracy to interfere with the election."
