Rittenhouse Judge Bans MSNBC From Courtroom Over Alleged Attempt to Photograph Jurors

The judge in Kyle Rittenhouse's trial banned MSNBC from the courtroom for the remainder of the trial Thursday after a freelance journalist for the network was cited for allegedly running a red light while trying to photograph jurors.

According to Kenosha Police Department, a man who was suspected of "trying to photograph jurors" was issued "several traffic related citations" Wednesday. The man reportedly claimed to be a journalist for MSNBC and said he was told by a superior to follow a bus carrying the jurors. Police said "there was no breach of security regarding the jury, nor were there any photographs obtained." Judge Bruce Schroeder said Thursday that the man ran a red light in pursuit of the bus; he had previously complained about the media's "“grossly irresponsible handling” of the courtroom situation and trial. An NBC News spokesperson said "the freelancer never contacted or intended to contact the jurors during deliberations, and never photographed or intended to photograph them." Jurors concluded a third day of deliberations Thursday without reaching a verdict, and will resume deliberating on Friday morning.

The news was covered across the spectrum Thursday. Right-rated outlets covered the story more prominently and often framed it as an example of media bias. Some coverage from left- and center-rated sources highlighted Schroeder's complaints about the media and other examples of purportedly questionable behavior from him.
